Search by
You can search by one or both Names of the parties, Year, and County.

The "County" field also allows searching by Country for places outside England & Wales.

While most entries (nearly ¼ million) are for Surrey (see Parishes in the index), there are significant numbers of entries for many other counties, including 18,000 for Middlesex (see Middlesex parishes in the index), 1,700 for the City of London, over 900 for Hampshire, and 348 for Sussex.

Dates
The dates in this index are Old Style, i.e. for the period prior to 1753 when the new year began on 25 March, for dates between 1 January and 25 March, the “old” year will be shown. In many transcripts marriages between January and March are listed with two year references e.g. 2 February 1721/22, but in this Index, only the first year is recorded, i.e. 1721 in this example.

Personal names
Surname variants can be searched using NameX (see below), so you should rarely need to search all possible variants of a name. To a large extent first names have been standardized, but again NameX will generally find any variants which may appear.

First (given) name spellings have been standardised to make searching easier; to check on the original spelling you will need to consult the original register. Please be aware that the Index is based on existing transcripts so it is only as good as they are. These varied from published transcripts to transcripts produced from original registers in the record office.

Place names
Place names have been standardised as far as possible and are shown in full.

Duplicate index records
In the Surrey Marriages Index, where there was uncertainty about the original manuscript text, an additional index record was often created. It will generally be quite obvious when two index records refer to the same event: all details will be the same apart from a spelling difference of one of the names, or the date is slightly different. Here are some examples:
