Wills can be the best source of family relationship information, holding great potential value in furthering your research. Information in wills goes beyond immediate family, and both expected and unexpected information may turn up, usually initiating further research.

Wills offer such wonderful possibilities. Oxfordshire Wills Index 1547-1857 is well worth checking for anyone who lived in or adjacent to the county.

  • Phillimore & Thrift, Indexes to Irish Wills 1536-1858
    This series, compiled from existing finding aids at the Public Record Office in Dublin, contains entries for over 30,000 wills for many of the diocesan consistorial courts of Ireland up to 1800, and some up to 1858.

  • Sir Arthur Vicars, Index to the Prerogative Wills of Ireland 1536-1810
    This important book is well known to Irish genealogists. It contains an index to over 40,000 Irish wills, most of which were destroyed in the 1922 explosion at the Public Record Office in Dublin.

The 1798 Rebellion: Claimants and Surrenders
The 1798 Rebellion was a watershed in Irish history. It has been estimated that up to 30,000 people were killed during the uprising, with many more wounded. This dataset brings together some of the few remaining primary sources about the people involved in this conflict. It contains two lists of individuals who made claims for compensation for loss of property during the rising, and also two lists of rebels who surrendered in Dublin City and Coolock Barony.

In total there are over 8,000 names included in this dataset covering two different groups – those who took up arms and those whose property was damaged. These groups come from every social background, from poor Dublin city labourers and artisans to the aristocratic ascendancy of late eighteenth century Ireland.

Bassett's Directories of Ireland
William Bassett began publishing county directories in the 1870s for Limerick, and over the following 20 years published directories for many Irish counties. The collection here includes:

Bassett's publications are both a directory and a guide to the county in the year for which they were published. They are some of the most important sources published for these counties in the late nineteenth century, recording details (addresses and occupations) for around 10,000 people in each county. Each volume contains around 400 pages of detailed information, as well as an excellent full colour map.

Ireland's Memorial Records 1914-18
The objective of these volumes was to preserve the names of over 49,000 Irishmen who lost their lives fighting in the Great War, World War I, 1914-1918. The collection, published in 1923, was compiled by The Committee of the Irish National War Memorial under the direction of the Earl of Ypres. It is the most complete record known and is unique in many ways.

Name, rank, regiment, regimental number, and in most cases, county/place of birth, and place and date of death are recorded. Subscribers can also view the original printed publication for every entry which may contain more information.

Dublin Will and Grant Books Index, 1270-1858
Highly recommended for family history researchers and those studying the social history of Dublin, and east Ireland. Since most of the original records were destroyed in the Irish Public Records Office in 1922, these indexes of marriages and wills provide a record of events which might otherwise be unidentifiable.

Slater's Royal National and Commerical Directory of Ireland, 1870
Published in Manchester and London in 1870, encompasses almost 1,200 pages of text and more than 154,000 names.

Subdivided into provinces and further subdivided into counties with entire sections given over to the cities of Belfast and Dublin. Each county and city is introduced by a brief social and political history as well as topographical and geographical descriptions.

Only a handful of truly national Irish directories are available, so this directory is a vital research tool.

British Origins: Association Oath Rolls 1696
Oaths of allegiance, used to secure the loyalty to the sovereign and to help identify potential opponents, were relatively common in in post-Reformation and revolutionary England. Oath rolls offer a valuable pre-19th century "census substitute" often containing a substantial proportion of adult male names within the areas they covered.

The Association Oath followed the discovery in 1696 of a plot to assassinate William III. A transcription of the Association Oath Rolls for the City of London Livery Companies are now available on British Origins. This dataset contains the names of over 21,500 members of 77 livery companies.

British Origins & Irish Origins: British & Irish Passenger Lists 1891
Passenger records for all 1891 sailings from Irish ports to US and Canadian destinations have now been added to British & Irish Passenger Lists 1890 & 1891. These new records include the names of nearly 50,000 passengers. This dataset now contains the names of nearly 200,000 passengers.

In many cases lists are clearly multiple members of the same family present on the list, making these records much more valuable than simply records of individuals.

Irish Origins: Brian J. Cantwell's Memorials of the Dead
Between c.1970-1990 Brian J. Cantwell transcribed and published 11 volumes of graveyard transcriptions primarily covering Counties Wicklow, Wexford and South Dublin.
Cantwell's original typewritten records have all been scanned and are available now on Irish Origins as digitised images. All the names in the transcriptions have been indexed - over 60,000 people are mentioned covering all visible and legible memorials in graveyards that had a date of 1880 or before and all surviving interior church memorials.

Now available to British Origins and Total Access subscribers, over 150,000 marriages transcribed by Somerset & Dorset Family History Society from parish registers, Bishops Transcripts, and non-conformist circuit registers.

St Andrew Holborn Marriage Index 1754-1812
Origins Network has now added over over 92,000 names from the marriage registers of one of the biggest parishes in London - St Andrew Holborn Marriage Index 1754-1812.

Entries from these marriage registers do not appear on the International Genealogical Index or in Boyd's Marriage Index. For this reason the Society of Genealogists decided to embark a project to transcribe and index the registers. We are pleased to announce these records are now available to British Origins and Total Access subscribers.

Militia Attestations Index 1860-1915
Indexes to records for further 6 English militia regiments have now been added to British Origins Militia Attestations Index 1860-1915: East Yorkshire Regiment, Durham RGA, Lancashire RGA, Northumberland Fusiliers, West Riding Regiment and Wiltshire. These cover over 23,500 recruits to these regiments. British Origins: Surrey Will Abstracts (1470-1856)
A major new collection on British Origins, Surrey Will Abstracts (1470-1856) are among the most valuable research sources for Surrey. These fully indexed abstracts of all 28,000 wills proved in the Archdeaconry and Commissary Courts of Surrey and known still to exist, are now available online exclusively on British Origins

The Wills provide a more detailed picture of how our ancestors lived than almost any other genealogical resource. The wills come from a cross section of society, most testators being people of relatively modest means - artisans and tradesmen. Many contain rich details of the testator's property and the value placed upon it - clothes, furniture, tools, land. Even if you don't find one of your own ancestors in these records, by searching on date and occupation, you may find people living at the same times and in similar conditions to your ancestors. Dating from the 15th to the 19th centuries, the abstracts include all personal names (testator, beneficiaries, executors, witnesses, overseers and others) with their relationships, place names, occupations, monetary and other bequests, and descriptions of lands. The indexes include the name of every person mentioned - over a quarter of a million people. Searches can be made on name and date or by using the "free text" search facility to look for any word in the abstracts.

Above all, the Surrey Will Abstracts provide one of the best sources of any kind for identifying family members. The average will contain the names of ten people and some many more; most of these people are related.

Irish Origins: Memorials of the Dead - Galway & Mayo
This index includes full transcripts of the surviving memorials found in the 128 graveyards and churches of west Counties Galway and Mayo. Over 3,000 memorials dated up to 1901 have been transcribed and over 8,000 names indexed, including names added for erectors who were not otherwise commemorated. Memorials were often erected by American relatives, and their details are included.

British and Irish Passenger Lists 1890 now complete
Abstracts of all 1890 passenger lists from British and Irish ports with US and Canadian destinations are available on The Origins Network. The names of nearly 200,000 passengers are now included.

The passenger records are abstracts of 1890 passenger lists from British & Irish ports with US and Canadian destinations, compiled by Peter Coldham directly from the original lists held at The National Archives, London. The original lists are often very difficult to read but we believe these abstracts are the most accurate available anywhere.

The records include date of sailing; ship's name, departure port, destination port. For each passenger, the full name is given, occupation, nationality, age, and marital status.

Three extra destination ports have been added to the existing 11 previously on Origins Network, which are: Galveston, Vancouver & West Indies.

Boyd’s Marriage Index - London and Middlesex Supplement on British Origins
While Boyd's Marriage Index is the largest index of pre-1837 English marriages, it is estimated that only 15% of marriages for the period are included.

Cliff Webb has undertaken to "fill in the gaps" for the City of London and Middlesex, to the extent that is possible from surviving records. This "Supplement" is integrated in the British Origins database with Boyd's index records, so that Boyd's Marriage Index and the Supplement may be searched simultaneously.

This is an on-going project. In the first batch of new records for London and Middlesex nearly 96,000 marriages have been indexed (nearly 200,000 names); over 50,000 City of London marriages and 46,000 for Middlesex. These include 3,100 Jewish marriages from Bevis Marks and the Great Synagogues, 3,160 Roman Catholic marriages, and 862 Huguenot marriages.

Please note that the most of the marriages included in the Supplement are not, to the best of our knowledge, available anywhere else online.

1831 Tithe Defaulters on Irish Origins
The 1831 Tithe Defaulters index contains over 29,000 names of people who refused to pay their tithe and so started the Tithe War. The people most affected by the Tithe War are precisely those most affected by emigration and the famine in the next generation. This unique record of names, addresses and occupations provides an important genealogical source for Ireland, especially given the near total destruction of the 1831 census.

Irish Origins: Transatlantic Migration North America to Britain and Ireland 1858-1870
The only surviving ships' passenger lists for ships returning to Britain and Ireland from North America between 1858 and 1870. Because of the threat of an uprising in Ireland, the government required that ports in Britain and Ireland submit their incoming ships' passenger lists. These records were deposited at The National Archives of Ireland and are not available at the UK National Archives. The Index contains all details recorded on these documents as well as lists of ships and details of their voyages. Over 42,000 names are recorded most of whom were of Irish, English or Scottish origins.

British Origins: Boyd’s Family Units
Boyd's London Inhabitants dataset has been extended by a further 10,000 Boyd’s Family Units family sheets which include 137,000 names. Families from London, all over Great Britain, and elsewhere, are recorded, including North American families linked to England.  This collection has been one of the glories of the Society of Genealogists Library, and provides a unique source of information on whole families.

The London City Burials Index covers over 36,000 burials in 76 parishes of the City of London for the period 1813-1853. It greatly extends Boyd's London Burials, which contains details of 243,000 burials, but over a much longer period. London City Burials covers all burials - men, women and children - and nearly always shows the age.

1841 England and Wales Census news - FINAL COUNTIES AVAILABLE!
The counties of Caernarvonshire, Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire, Cumberland, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Merionethshire, Pembrokeshire and Islands (Alderney, Guernsey, Herm, Jersey, Jethon, Calf of Man, Isle of Man, Serk) are now available for searching on the 1841 England & Wales Census. These records are fully indexed and all the images are available for viewing online.

This completes the 1841 census on The Origins Network and brings the final 1841 name count online to over 15,790,000 records!

Domesday Book for Middlesex now available in British Origins Library
A facsimile of the Domesday Book entries for Middlesex, published 1862, is now available in the British Origins Library. Transcriptions of the Latin entries and their English translations are provided. The translation volume also contains indexes to places and to persons mentioned in the original. Additionally, there are images of two brochures used to promote sales of the facsimile and translation volumes.

The Commission interviewed hundreds of children, parents and employers throughout Great Britain and Ireland for its 1842 Report.

Prerogative & Exchequer Courts of York Probate Index on British Origins
Prior to 1858, wills were proved in an ecclesiastical court. Which court dealt with a particular will depended on where property was held.

Parishes of the Church of England were grouped into archdeaconries, and a group of archdeaconries formed a diocese (i.e the area of a bishop's jurisdiction). Each diocese belonged either to the ecclesiastical province of York or of Canterbury. The province of York had jurisdiction in the counties of Cheshire, Cumberland, Durham, Lancashire, Northumberland, Nottinghamshire, Westmorland and Yorkshire; Canterbury had jurisdiction over the rest of England and Wales.

If a person's property lay wholly within one archdeaconry, the will was generally proved in that archdeacon's court. But if property worth 5 or more were owned elsewhere the will would be proved in a higher court, that of a bishop or archbishop.

The Prerogative & Exchequer Court of York Probate Index gives:
  • testator's name
  • places associated with person; usually the place of death, but sometimes other places where the testator lived are mentioned
  • date of probate year & month
  • type(s) of documents (there is often more than one document)
  • court concerned
  • Borthwick Institute reference to the original document(s)
  • Reference to original index
The Origins Network in association with the Borthwick Institute for Archives are completing the computerisation of the indexes to the Prerogative & Exchequer Court of York probate material; only the Medieval part (1267-1500) of these indexes had previously been computerised. This work is being done in reverse chronological order, starting from 1858, and the first batch of index records, covering over 16,000 grants of probate for the period September 1853 to January 1858 is now available online exclusively on British Origins. About two thirds of the wills were proved in the Prerogative Court. This index complements the indexes to the York Medieval and York Peculiars probate material.

The original documents provide a great deal of valuable information to the family historian and copies of these can be ordered online via British Origins.

Charles I Chancery Index 1625-49 available on British Origins
This dataset is an index to all 82,000 cases tried in the Court of Chancery during the reign of Charles I, i.e. between 1625 and 1649. Chancery records are of particular value to family historians, because they often reveal personal, business and family relationships in more detail than almost any other source. Chancery records are a particularly important source of information for descendants of early migrants to North America.

The index itself identifies only the surnames of the plaintiff and the defendant, and gives the reference for the source documents held at The National Archives. Abstracts of the records can be ordered online at a cost of 16, which will allow you to determine how valuable the case records are likely to be to you.

Teachers Registrations (1870-1948) now on British Origins
The latest dataset to be added to British Origins (www.britishorigins.com) is the Teachers’ Registrations, a list of over 100,000 people who taught in England and Wales between 1870 and 1948 - more than half of these are women.

From 1914, many teachers in England and Wales (and elsewhere) registered with the Teachers Registration Council. The original registration records for the period up to 1948 (after which registration was abandoned) were deposited with the Society of Genealogists (www.sog.org.uk) The Origins Network has now scanned and indexed these records to make them publicly available for the first time, on British Origins.

Although registration only started in 1914, since people who were already teaching registered, the records cover teachers who started their careers from the 1870s on.

The records provide the following information:
  • teacher’s name (and for married women teachers often their maiden name as well)
  • Date of Registration
  • Register Number
  • (Professional) Address
  • Attainments
  • Training in Teaching
  • Experience

Boyd's Inhabitants of London
Boyd's Inhabitants of London is a collection of 60,000 handwritten sheets each containing details of a London family, mostly covering the period of 16th to 18th centuries but including people from the 13th to 20th. This resource is now available on British Origins www.britishorigins.com.

Compiled by Percival Boyd from a miscellany of sources, these extraordinary sheets are one of the Society of Genealogists' most valuable holdings, and provide a key sources for researchers into London families.

Each sheet is based upon a man who was usually, but not always, a citizen of London. A sheet typically shows as a minimum the name of the man, the parish where he lived in London, and the date of his marriage. But many sheets show far more information, which can include: names of father and mother; names of mother's parents; wife's name and place she was living at the time of marriage; date and place of birth; date and place of death; date and place of marriage; notes on education and occupation; a note regarding the person's will; children's names, dates of birth/baptism, marriage & to whom.

On average a sheet contains the names of 6-7 people, but some contain as many as fifty. Nearly half a million names appearing in the sheets are included in the person index, so you can search on a person's name, and optionally a year, and then view the pages containing references to that person. If you are lucky, you may then find information on many other people related by blood or marriage to the one you searched for.

The Origins Network: 1890 Passenger Lists – British and Irish Origins
The first set of passenger records to be provided on The Origins Network are abstracts of 1890 passenger lists from British & Irish ports with US and Canadian destinations, compiled by Peter Coldham directly from the original lists held at The National Archives, London. The names of over 100,000 passengers are included. To the best of our knowledge, the original lists have never been indexed, and these records are exclusive to The Origins Network.

The 1890 lists cover a total of 455 sailings, from the ports all over the British Isles. At present, for Liverpool only sailings with departure dates in January, February and March are included; for all other ports sailings for the whole year are included.

Irish Origins: Census of Elphin 1749 is now available for searching on Irish Origins
This dataset contains records for nearly 20,000 people residing in the Diocese of Elphin in 1749 and the data is accompanied by digitised images of the full publication.

The completeness, detail of occupations, status and households that the Census of Elphin includes is unique. Conducted by Bishop Edward Synge, the census gives an insight into rural Ireland in the mid-18th century. It tells us about the occupation and religion of the heads of household, the size of their family, size of their household, who had servants and how many.

Over 13,500 names from the Rotunda Ward in Dublin City (1901) can now be searched on Irish Origins, this comprises a full extraction of the data in the relevant 1901 census records.

For every property the following information is given:
  • Road, street, town or village and number or name of property - Rural properties may simply be referred to as, for example, "Cottage"
  • Street name
  • Street number
  • Class of house - 1st, 2nd, or 3rd class
  • Whether occupied
For each person in a household the following is given:
  • Forename and surname
  • Relation to Head of household
  • Religion
  • Age
  • Sex
  • Occupation
  • Marital status
  • County of birth - may sometimes be a country, if not Ireland
  • Irish Language - whether the person spoke Irish
  • DDBI - whether deaf, dumb, blind, or imbecile
  • Disease - for some hospital returns, the ailment is given
  • Time Effected - for some hospital returns the time affected by the ailment is given
When you have made a search, you are able to view the records for all persons present at the same address when the census was made. You can also look at records of occupants of adjacent properties.

British Origins: London Apprentice Records: Fishmongers and Vintner records containing 80,000 names added to British Origins covering the years 1609-1800
Records of the Livery Companies of London are one of the greatest archival treasures of the world. Dating from the late medieval period to the present, they provide a mass of information on innumerable subjects. For the family historian, they can provide an immense amount of genealogical and biographical details on members.

The Abstracts provide information from the apprenticeship records of a number of the livery companies selected because the records generally give good genealogical detail, principally, the name, parish and occupation of the apprentice's father. For a given livery company, the abstracts will generally end about 1800 or later, depending on the coverage of the manuscript volume containing that year. In some cases records cease before 1800.

In early records, persons who belonged to a given livery company would generally practice the trade to which that Company referred, but after about 1650, it became more and more common (until in some companies virtually universal) that members practised another trade altogether.

Searchers, therefore, even if they know the occupation of the subject of interest, may not be able to find the right livery company to search at all easily. British and Irish Origins: Children's Employment Commission Part II
An extraordinarily rich source of information on working and social conditions in the early 19th century, the Children's Employment Commission Report on Trades and Manufactures, has been placed online. The Commission interviewed hundreds of children, parents and employers throughout Great Britain and Ireland for its 1842 Report, which is now available to subscribers to The Origins Network (www.originsnetwork.com).

This unique source can be used in many ways. You can find out about working conditions in factories in the first half of the 19th century, all over the British Isles. You can find out how your forebears lived, the kind of housing they stayed in, what they ate, what they did in their leisure time, how much money they earned. British Origins: Apprentices of Great Britain 1710 - 1774
About 350,000 apprentice records from all over Great Britain (about 20% are Scottish) are now available for searching on British Origins.

These records are abstracts from tax records kept by the Inland Revenue.

They are of exceptional value to the family history researcher, containing the name of the apprentice, in most cases the name of the apprentice’s parent or guardian (usually the father, though sometimes the mother, if the father was dead), the place the apprentice came from, his father’s trade, the name of the master to whom he was indentured, the master’s trade, the place where the master lived, and the value of the premium paid to the master for taking on the apprentice.

Irish Origins: William Smith O'Brien Petition 1848-9
The William Smith O'Brien Petition is list of over 80,000 names and places from 1848/9, the time of the Great Famine. It is a valuable census substitute for that time, as well as an important historical resource. This is now available exclusively to Irish Origins and Origins Total Access subscribers

For the family history researcher the William Smith O'Brien Petition records are essentially a census substitute: they give the names of people present at a particular place and time. Addresses are often given, and sometimes occupations. The petition was generated between October 1848 and May 1849, so during the Famine years in Ireland. Trinity House Calendars 1787- 1854
The latest addition to The Origins Network, an index to petitions to Trinity House for charitable aid by disabled seamen or their widows, provides access to an extraordinary amount of genealogical information.

The petitions, covering the period 1787 to 1854, give a career history for the seaman, names and ages of his dependants, and other documents typically including baptismal and marriage certificates. These papers cover families from all over the United Kingdom.

The Calendars, which are detailed, printed, indexes to the papers, in name order, have been digitised and a surname index (6,500 records) allows easysearching of these calendars. Hard copies of the original papers can be ordered online.
1841 England and Wales Census - England's First Census - Available for the first time exclusively on British Origins!

The Borthwick Institute for Archives, York Probate Records (over 35,000 records)
The Borthwick Institute's archive of probate records (wills, inventories and associated records) is the largest in England outside London and are now available exclusively to British Origins subscribers.

York Medieval Probate Index 1267-1500
This index covers over 10,000 wills proved in the Prerogative & Exchequer Courts of York in the period 1267 to 1500. Wills are one of the most important sources for the family historian, and the originals of all the wills indexed here are held at the Borthwick Institute for Archives. Copies of these wills can be ordered online, via the index.

York Peculiars Probate Index 1383-1883
This index, accessible only via British Origins, covers over 25,000 wills proved in the fifty four peculiar courts of the Province of York in the five-hundred year period from 1383 to 1883. The originals of all the wills indexed here are again held at the Borthwick Institute for Archives and copies of these wills can be ordered online, via the indexes.
Inheritance Dispute Index (1574-1714): over 26,000 records
This database, compiled by Peter Coldham, makes available for the first time, and exclusively on British Origins, a comprehensive index to over 26,000 lawsuits instituted in the Chancery Court of England relating to inheritance of money or real estate.

The Index to Inheritance Disputes identifies whose estate the case is concerned with, where that person lived, the parties to the dispute, the date the case started, and The National Archives (TNA) reference(s) to the original documents. The index covers the wills, bequests, grants of administration, descent of property, identity claims and other testamentary disputes tried in the Chancery Court in London.

These cases typically involved several members of the same family so are of particular value to family historians.
1890 Irish Passenger Lists - Exclusive to The Origins Network
Our 1890 Irish Passenger Lists contain over 45,000 names of passengers on board ships from Irish ports to US destinations.

These records have been compiled directly by Peter Coldham from the original lists held at The National Archives and to the best of our knowledge have never been indexed before. These records are exclusive to The Origins Network.

This data holds a wealth of information including:
Ship information including: date of sailing, ship’s name, tonnage, name of master, departure port and destination and a full passenger list and line.
Passenger information such as: full name, occupation, nationality, age and marital status.

British Militia Records – Suffolk and Middlesex
Over 29,000 new Militia records are now available exclusively on British Origins! These cover the counties of Suffolk and Middlesex.

Suffolk Regiment & Suffolk Royal Garrison Artillery
The index covers the attestations for 3,450 recruits to the Suffolk Regiment (3rd and 4th battalions), and 2,170 recruits to the Suffolk Royal Garrison Artillery (now the Royal Artillery), for the period 1887 to 1908. 61% of the recruits were from Suffolk, but these militia also recruited from Cambridgeshire, which accounts for a further 24%.

Middlesex Regiment
The index covers the attestations for 11,500 recruits to the 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th Battalions of the Middlesex Regiment, for the period 1860 to 1901. Of these recruits, 73% are from Middlesex or London, with a further 13% from Kent and Surrey. There are a smattering from outside England: Ireland (84), Scotland (51) and Wales (41).

Half a million new names are included in the London/Kent and Middlesex records and all these contain images accessible to British Origins and Total Access subscribers. New Irish Origins Collection: Dublin City Census 1851
Over 60,000 names and addresses of heads of household (including occupations where present) are available for searching, accompanied by scanned images of the original 1847 Ordnance Survey Town Plans of Dublin City, to help users identify specific addresses.
With the 19th Irish Census having been destroyed, this remaining census of Ireland’s capital city, Dublin, is of extreme importance to researchers everywhere. Compiled by Dr D.A Chart, the index consists of two hand written volumes, one for Dublin City South and one for Dublin City North.
New British Origins Collection: London & Middlesex 1871 Census records: 2.3 million new names available

New Irish Origins Collection: Index of Irish Wills (1484-1858)
Another Irish Origins online exclusive, the Index of Irish Wills contains a full index to surviving testamentary records at the National Archives of Ireland. As the vast majority of Ireland's testamentary records were lost in the destruction of the Public Record Office in 1922, this one-of-a kind collection, which includes names, addresses, occupations, and more, is particularly valuable.

English Origins change to British Origins
We shall be adding an increasing amount on non-English data (starting with the 1871 census for Glamorgan) during the next few months, and so we have changed the name "English Origins" to British Origins to reflect this. British Origins provides access to all the existing English Origins datasets, but the proportion of Welsh and Scottish data will gradually increase. Major improvement to the IGI search facility on Scots Origins

Origins users accessing the IGI search on Scots Origins can now retrieve search results for all names in one particular county and district, by entering the surname only.
Alternatively, if someone wishes to view all the names in a particular parish in a year, this is also now possible on the Scots Origins IGI search. Simply type in the year and parish required and results will be retrieved for all names in that parish in the year chosen.

Boyd's marriage extracts now available for ordering for Suffolk
Boyd's Marriage Index covers the years 1538-1840, and contains over 277,000 Suffolk marriages (over 554,000 names). This is the first county to have hard copies available, and we plan to introduce the facility of ordering online for all other counties covered in Boyd's in due course.

English Origins users who have previously searched the Suffolk marriage records, can access previous downloads to see if hard copies are now available for any of the index records already retrieved.

Hard copies are processed by the Society of Genealogists and cost £10 (approx $15USD). These will be sent via 1st class post, or by airmail where applicable.

48 hours English Origins access now increased to 7 days for all users!
After significant feedback from our users, we have decided, along with the Society of Genealogists, to increase access to English Origins to 7 days (continuous access) instead of the previous 48 hour time limit, for all our users.

New London Apprentice records added to English Origins
Over 60,000 names have been uploaded to the London Apprentice datasets on English Origins. The new apprentice companies which are now available for searching are:
  • PAINTERS
  • PEWTERERS
  • TALLOW CHANDLERS
  • TURNERS
This addition brings the total number of London Apprentice names on English Origins to over 300,000 (over 100,000 London Apprentice records).

NameX added to English Origins
NameX, one of the most powerful and sophisticated 'name matching' tools available on the Web has now been added to English Origins (www.englishorigins.com).

Searching using the NameX feature locates a wider range of genuine variants of a person's name than any other software. NameX is vastly superior to the widely used Soundex, which is really not well adapted for searching for name variants. For example, in a list of 55 million surnames NameX identified 147 highly plausible variants for the surname Wilson; Soundex identified 1185 "variants", of which nearly 90% are unlikely in the extreme (eg Wahlgamath, Whilesmith, Willigenburg).

NameX works both with surnames and with forenames, and allows forename diminutives often being quite different from the "real" forename. For example, searching on Margaret will also find Marg, Mgt, Marg't, Maggie, Peggy, etc. At the top of the Results page, names which have been included in the search are listed in a drop down box. eg. If Smith has been entered a list of names under SMITH + variants) will be displayed showing which names (such as Smithe, Smythe etc) are included in the results.
